Second best on the night

Newcastle Utd 1

Man Utd 0

United were, sadly, not at the races tonight. ETH opted for Shaw to partner Maguire with AWB and Dalot as full backs. Mainoo and McTominay in the middle of the park, Rashford, Bruno and Garnacho just behind Martial.

That starting 11, on paper, is better than the 11 Newcastle players that started and yet we were totally outplayed and if anything, we could easily have been handed a heavier defeat had the Newcastle forwards put on their scoring boots.

At the end, it was a goal conceded 10 minutes into the second half that made the difference but sadly, we were second best all night. On current form, I did not expect us to go to Newcastle and dominate, but surely, ETH cannot be satisfied with just one shot on target. The statistics are damning…corners, touches in opposition box, km run, etc.

The main problem I have with Maguire starting is that even when he has a solid display like yesterday, we defend too deep as a team. We needed to play the game at least 15 meters forward from where we played yesterday to have a chance. Add to that that with Rashford and Martial practically not in the game, we were outnumbered from the start. This United team lacks what Newcastle have in abundance, determination. Every Newcastle player gives 100% on the pitch. ETH keeps playing the likes of Rashford who does not seem bothered and Martial who only runs when he feels like it and this is going to cost him in my humble opinion.

The only 2 positives yesterday were the displays of Mainoo and also Garnacho, who at least tried despite facing an experienced Trippier. It pains me to say this, but ETH does not seem able to make the best choices at the moment and the team in unable to play at the level expected and he is running out of time. United supporters did not like Mourinho’s tactics but let’s face it, this United does not play exciting football…at all!…NUMQUAM MORIBIMUR!
