The Club’s Foundation
The Manchester United Supporters’ Club in Malta was founded on 4th February 1959. The Club Founder John Calleja narrates a summary of how it all happened.
‘In August 1957, I had my first visit at Old Trafford. I was overwhelmed by the great reception I got especially from the Boss Matt Busby. I had already started thinking how to reciprocate.
In August 1958, a few months after the Munich disaster, I went back to Old Trafford. I spoke to Sir Matt Busby about the idea of setting up a Manchester United Supporters’ Club in Malta. Busby was very enthusiastic about the idea and asked Secretary Les Olive and first team trainer Jack Crompton to give me all the possible help.
In December 1958, following an advert in the local newspapers, a preliminary meeting was held at St. Gregory’s Youth Centre in Sliema. 80 fans attended this meeting.
On 4th February 1959, the first official Annual General Meeting at Palazzo Caraffa, Valletta was held. About 90 members attended. The first official Committee was elected. Manchester United Supporters’ Club Malta was now officially set up with full approval from Old Trafford.
On 6th February 1959 the second official Club function was held. It was the first anniversary of the fatal Munich disaster and a mass was held at St. Catherine’s Chapel in Valletta. Since then the Club has grown from strength to strength.’
