Third place confirmed

Man Utd 3

Notts Forest 2

United signed off at Old Trafford for this season with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest. On an emotional afternoon filled with attacking football, controversy, and history-making moments,  United showed resilience and quality to secure all three points and confirm a third-place Premier League finish.

United started like a side determined to put on a show for the home crowd. Barely six minutes had passed when Luke Shaw smashed home the opener, scoring his first goal in over three years and setting the tone for an energetic first-half display. Bruno immediately took control of the tempo, spraying passes across the pitch but the Forest midfield did not make life easy, with Anderson under the mircoscope. Mbeumo nearly doubled the lead, rattling the post following a sharp United counterattack.

Forest were dangerous on the break, particularly through Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson, but United looked the more threatening side throughout the opening period. Lammens produced an important save to deny Gibbs-White, while Amad and Fernandes both came close as the Reds searched for breathing room before half-time. Despite the dominance, United only led 1-0 at the interval, leaving the contest finely balanced.

The second half exploded into life within minutes. Forest equalised in the 53rd minute through Morato after a well-worked set piece, briefly silencing Old Trafford. But United’s response was immediate and emphatic. Just three minutes later, Matheus Cunha restored the lead after reacting quickest inside the area following a blocked Mbeumo effort. The goal sparked furious protests from Forest players, who believed Mbeumo had handled the ball in the buildup. VAR reviewed the incident at length before allowing the strike to stand, much to the relief  all of us. Must confess though, that id did look like a handball!

From there, Bruno took over completely. The captain was magnificent all afternoon, and in the 76th minute he delivered another moment of brilliance, whipping a dangerous cross into the box for Mbeumo to turn home United’s third. That assist marked Fernandes’ 20th of the Premier League season, equalling the all-time single-season record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

Forest refused to roll over, though. Gibbs-White scored a superb improvised finish to make it 3-2 and set up a nervy finale. United had chances to kill the game late on, with Dalot hitting the post and Joshua Zirkzee denied twice by Matz Sels, but the Reds eventually held firm through a tense period of stoppage time.

There was also an emotional farewell feel to the afternoon as Casemiro received a standing ovation during what is expected to be his final home appearance for the club. By full-time, Old Trafford rose together onceķ again — celebrating not only a thrilling win, but a team that finally looks capable of building momentum again under Michael Carrick.  Numquam Moribimur….
