United Cruise Past Brighton on Last Match of the Season

Brighton & Hove Albion 0

Manchester United 3

If I have to be honest, I did not expect United to turn up with third place already secured. It had all the hallmarks of an end-of-season fixture: a subdued tempo, Brighton carrying more urgency, and United appearing slightly off the pace in the early stages.

Brighton started brighter and pushed forward with intent, looking the more energetic side in the opening exchanges. However, as United settled into the match, the quality began to show and we gradually started creating danger.

The breakthrough came through a set piece. Bruno, once again providing an assist in what has been a record-equalling season for creativity, delivered a corner into the box. Dorgu reacted sharply, anticipating the Brighton defence and heading into the net to put United 1–0 ahead.

Brighton were visibly stunned after conceding, and United took full control from that point. Possession became more controlled, transitions sharper, and the home side increasingly found themselves chasing the game.

Just before half-time, United struck again with a well-worked move. A slick one-two between Mount and Amad opened up the Brighton defence, allowing Mbeumo to finish from close range and make it 2–0. The timing of the goal, right on the stroke of half-time, felt decisive and left Brighton looking deflated going into the break.

The second half began with Brighton still clearly affected by the situation, and United quickly put the game beyond doubt. Bruno added the third goal after a swift counterattack, with Dorgu providing the assist following another impressive performance. At 3–0, the match was effectively settled.

From there, Brighton attempted to respond with substitutions and tactical adjustments, but they struggled to create meaningful chances. United remained organised and controlled the game comfortably. Lammens was largely untroubled throughout, making only a couple of routine saves as the team saw out the clean sheet with relative ease.

In truth, it became a controlled conclusion to the season for Manchester United, who secured third place in the league. At the midpoint of the season, such a finish did not look likely, but the transformation in the second half of the season was significant. Much of that turnaround is attributed to Michael Carrick, who is credited with stabilising and reshaping the team’s form.

Looking ahead, there is a clear sense that reinforcements will be needed in the summer, especially with Champions League football returning. The squad will require added depth and quality to compete across multiple competitions.

Expectations for next season, at this early stage, are measured but ambitious: a strong top-four challenge in the league, meaningful cup runs, and a competitive showing in Europe, potentially reaching the quarter-finals or beyond with favourable conditions.

For now, though, it is a season that ends on a positive note. Third place represents a solid achievement, even with the recognition that further progress will depend heavily on what happens in the transfer window. Numquam Moribimur
