The first half was at times decent by United but we were still second best. We did show some good football – just no penetration and ability to hurt opponents. Onana nearly gifted a goal with his wayward clearance but it was rightly called off for offside. It was still 0-0 at HT though and I was somehow optimistic.
9 minutes into the second half Arsenal scored from a corner. The deflection was inside the small box as we once again defended a set play horrendously. And we conceded a second in similar fashion. Very frustrating and you cannot possibly deserve anything from big matches if you fail in your basics. There was a moment where we could have equalised and the Arsenal keeper pulled of a stunning save from a De Ligt header, but it was just a moment. We did not create enough chances to score a consolation goal, let alone recover something from this match. No one seems able to produce that moment of magic that is needed in this squad.
We need to give Amorim time, true, but unless we sort out our defensive fragilities this season could be going worse than it has started…Numquam Moribimur!
