Man of the Match: Manchester United vs Liverpool (Premier League)

When we were all dreaming that United had a team that could seriously compete next season for the Premier League Title , we were brought down to earth with three losses in four games. Admittedly each game has its own story. However, in the game versus Liverpool the back four – with skipper Harry Macguire absent through injury – just did not do their job. And while Liverpool punished United for their errors, United did not do the same, a similar opportunity falling early to Cavani going to waste.  Two former United players were both not too complimentary. Gary Neville insists that United’s unbalanced midfield highlighted a critical dilemma that Ole has still has to solve. While Roy Keane opined that following this week’s losses,  United’s squad failings have been exposed. In fact it was when in the last 30 minutes after  Mason Greenwood came on for  Fred, that United finally became a real threat. Marcus Rashford then went to the left and Paul Pogba into the centre of midfield.

Not easy to pick the player who most influenced United’s game on this result, but  I would pick Marcus Rashford. He scored a good goal and made a number of key passes. He was always willing to go forward and take on players.

This season United have now lost six Premier League games at Old Trafford. This is more than in the previous two seasons combined, when United lost three in 2018-19 and two in 2019-20. United next play Fulham at Home on Tuesday with the final league match of the season away at Wolves on Sunday. This will leave the last opportunity to save face, the Europa League Final on Wednesday 26th.
