United’s victory over Liverpool is more than just a passage to the 5th round of the FA Cup (versus West Ham, at Old Trafford, next month). The victory first of all underlines United’s progress under Solskjaer. It underlines the fact that United are leaders in the Premier League table not by any coincidence. And that United are deservedly six points above Liverpool in the table. It will also lower the morale of Liverpool, in my view our greatest challengers, who were great favorites to win the League at the start of the season. The Merseysiders have now failed to progress beyond the fourth round in five of their six seasons under Jurgen Klopp and the Premier League champions have recorded just one win in their last seven games in all competitions. Interesting to note that this win marks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-ever win over Liverpool as United boss, 22 years to the day when he himself scored the winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup.
In my view Marcus Rashford deserves to be our Man of the Match. It was a very good performance and he was a constant threat with his pace. His assist to Greenwood for the equalizer was sensational , as he bent a diagonal pass fully 40 yards through the air into the path of Mason, with hardly any ‘back lift’. His positioning for his very well taken goal was also admirable. He made great runs, moved well, got down the left, pulled off some outrageous dribbling and 85ish minutes of punishing and humiliating Liverpool’s full-backs.
On Wednesday United look to consolidate their place at the top of the League with a home game against the bottom side Sheffield Un ited. Of course, on paper, top versus bottom, a foregone conclusion. But being long time United supporters, we know better!
