Man Utd 2
Leicester City 1
An injury time winner from Harry Maguire sent Leicester City and their manager RVN (must admit I felt a bit sorry for him) crushing out of the FA Cup. I could only watch glimpses of the match on my mobile phone due to other commitments but it does seem that it was another dull display by Amorim’s United.
Dorgu got his debut on the right and Dalot was on the left. This is one of the many things in modern football that I struggle with! Why do you have two wing backs playing on inverted sides? Since when has it become illogical to play a left sided player on the left and a right sided player on the right?
Yoro, Maguire and Mazraoui were our 3 defenders and Ugarte and Bruno played central, letting Mainoo and Diallo to ‘support’ Hojlund up front. It was a dull first half and Leicester took the lead when Ugarte lost possession cheaply in the danger area, the shot from outside the box was not held by Onana and the rebound was headed in. Ugarte will of course be taking the blame but I still believe that a goalkeeper should bee blocking that shot, or at least pushing it away!! 0-1 down at HT….not another home defeat cuing up?!!
Amorim took off Dorgu and sent on Garnacho at HT and the Argentinian nearly equalised as his shot was cleared off the bar after he had been sent through. On 64 minutes, Mainoo made way for Zirkzee and the equaliser was duly served to him on a plate when Garnacho once again caused havoc in the Leicester defence and his cross was met by Hojlund who saw his attempt blocked but the ball ran sweetly into the path of Zirkzee and it was 1-1. He could not possibly miss that could he!
Garnacho was again through later on but he made the wrong choice by trying to score when it was clear an assist was the choice to make in that instant. Hojlund was furious and rightly so. With injury time running out and extra time beckoning, Bruno delivered a freekick inside the box and Maguire headed home. 2-1 and into the next round. I must confess that it did seem offside to me, and we may have indeed got the rub of the green on this one, but we have had some terrible decisions against us lately so a bit of luck is more than welcome.
I still need to see more of Dorgu to assess if he is what we need or not – ideally in his proper position. Amorim has to make do with this squad till the end of the season and I still believe that these players can, and should, be playing better football. Amorim seems to be trying different players in different positions but he will stick to his system no matter what! Let us hope we find some consistency and finish the season decently as the fans deserve to see better…much better…Numquam Moribimur!
