Man Utd v Colchester: Man of the Match

Colchester United – lying in 9th place in Division 2 – were looking to become the first English side from outside the top-three tiers of English football to win away at Manchester United since Portsmouth in a January 1907 FA Cup first round replay – Pompey were then a non-league side. They had already eliminated Spurs and Crystal Palace so Colchester United came into this game hoping to advance further in the League Cup.

Manchester United, on the other hand were unbeaten in their previous five games in all competitions.

In reality Colchester United never looked like they would be able to spring another surprise. Following an uneventful first half, Manchester United took control of the match and scored three times to advance to the semi final, where they will face Manchester City. The sides will meet at Old Trafford first, on Tuesday 7 January 2020, with the ‘away leg at the Etihad Stadium on the 29 January.

My United Man of the Match is Andreas Pereira. He was easily United’s most creative player throughout the whole match, and kept picking the ball from his own half, advancing and finding teammates with excellent passes. Had been disappointing in previous games but this time he has stepped up his game and repaid the faith shown in him by the Boss. .

It has now been 12 months since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s took over at Manchester United and with United now being unbeaten in their last six games, United fans are all hoping that United are slowly but surely turning the corner, in spite of injuries to star players such as Paul Pogba.
