So United are still without a home win this season and lying in 15th place, six points behind the leaders Everton, with the same number of games. This is also just three places – and six points – off the drop zone. This first no score draw, while earning United their first home point also meant that United have failed to score for the first time after 30 matches. This from a team with several players capable of finding the net, not least Uruguayan Edinson Cavani, who made his debut (and almost scored with his first touch). It was a match played in heavy rain, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reverting to the team which beat Newcastle in the Premier League last weekend, with Harry Maguire, Juan Mata and Daniel James back in the starting eleven. It was a balanced match, with equal possession. United had 14 shots on goal, just 4 of them on target. Chelsea had only one shot on target, opting for the tactic of tight marking each United player.
My Man of the Match would be 22 year old Marcus Rashford. He seems to have got his confidence back, not fearing taking on defenders and shooting at goal. Unfortunately he couldn’t build on his recent heroics yet he yet still posed a threat and will be frustrated at failing to score. He missed a big chance around the 30-minute mark to put United 1-0 up, which shot, had it gone in, would not have been too dissimilar from the goal he scored against PSG. He even came agonizingly close to grabbing the winner for the second time in the same week after his 91st-minute curled effort was met with a flying Mendy.
Next up the Champions League, RB Leipzig on Wednesday, then Arsenal in the league on Sunday. Plenty of opportunities for the Boss to give all players an opportunity, which we all hope they will take.
