Wolves v Manchester United: Man of the Match

So once again United have failed to beat Wolves. Believe it or not the last time United beat Wolves was by a 5-0 score line at Molineux back in March 2012! This was the 10th FA Cup match between Wolves and United and it was the fourth time in ten months that the Reds have made the journey to the Black Country, having faced Nuno Espirito Santo’s side in the quarter-finals of last season’s competition and twice in the league. In fact Wolves are now unbeaten in their last five matches against United under this manager. The two sides are separated by just one point in the Premier League table, with United fifth and Wolves in seventh after both suffered defeats in their last outings.

United were without Paul Pogba – who needs ankle surgery – as well as the other five confirmed absences, Scott McTominay, – out for ‘a few months’ , reports the Boss – Eric Bailly, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Axel Tuanzebe and Marcos Rojo. Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard were also absent, having reported ill.

My United Man of the Match would be young Brandon Williams. He coped better than expected with the Wolves right flank threat and was always a danger going forward. In fact he had a decent shout for a penalty rejected.

Manchester United are still in the FA Cup, but the 12-times winners now need a replay at Old Trafford. Hopefully more players will be available for selection. This was not what United needed, with a crowded 2020 coming up. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have similar selection problems in the first leg of that Carabao Cup semi-final at Old Trafford against Man City in midweek.
