So United are now up to 3rd place in the Premier League, with just one game to go. United face Leicester City (away) while Chelsea, who lost to Liverpool, face Wolves (at home). United were unbeaten in their previous 11 Premier League home games against West Ham, the latter lying just above the relegation zone. However considering United’s persistent sloppy passing, crosses and control in this home game against West ham, it was possible for a neutral to assume that United have no real interest in the ‘top four’.
David de Gea needed one more clean sheet to surpass Peter Schmeichel’s 112 Premier League shutouts for Manchester United, having most clean sheets of any goalkeeper for the club in the competition. However it was not to be. Paul Pogba inexplicably handled the ball, in the penalty area with the ball going wide, and West Ham, took the lead from the resultant penalty. It was only thanks to young Mason Greenwood, making his 50th appearance for Manchester United that United equalized. He leveled things up with a low drive just after the break. Greenwood became the youngest player to reach the milestone since Ryan Giggs in 1992.
My Man of the Match award thus goes to Mason Greenwood, who showed real commitment throughout. His 17th goal of the season now places him alongside George Best, Wayne Rooney and Brian Kidd as Manchester United’s most prolific teenagers. More important his second-half equaliser means that Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side have only to draw at Leicester on Sunday’s final day to seal fourth place and Champions League qualification.
