1. Southampton are a good team at St Mary’s and I’ve seen them outplaying Liverpool this season, but could not get anything out of that match because of two moments of brilliance from Mane. I agree with Ole when he says that this United team is improving with every game but the results are not showing it. We are creating chances and plenty of them, but we are not taking those chances and goals win you games. And it is on this matter that I disagree with Ole. Today was the perfect opportunity to start Mason Greenwood. Mason is the best finisher at United and even Ole admitted this before the start of the season. Sir Alex once said, “If you’re good enough, you’re old enough.” Just play the kid.
2. I liked what I had seen from United in pre-season and the first matches. Ole clearly wants to rely on youth and has introduced a system of pressing high up the pitch. You can only be successful in this system however if the team has quick and aggressive players applying the pressure. I was underwhelmed when I saw the starting eleven today. Playing Mata and expecting him to press is like asking me to build a house. I am just not capable. Mata tried and failed but it’s not his fault. The Premiership is too physical for him now. Mata should be used sparingly by Ole in the League this season. When you need to break down an opposing team that has parked the bus and spaces are limited in the opposing penalty area, then he is one of the few players at United that can open defences. But please, don’t ask the lad to harass opponents. He is too nice.
3. Young had a terrible match today. I don’t agree with the stick that some United fans give Ashley. I think it is not justified. The lad plays for the jersey and gives everything he’s got. And I have to say that in most of the times, he delivers exactly what is asked from him. But today he could not put a foot right. He had many stray passes and suffered the pressing that Ward-Prowse was applying on him. With Shaw out for a few weeks, United really need their captain to show his mettle and improve.
