Paul Merson has opined, “The biggest team in the world, in my opinion, are out of the Champions League.” So the dream has ended, for this year at least. United relegated to the Europa League. Another five goals, same as the previous meeting at Old Trafford, but this time 3 – 2 in favour of the home side. United had to rest two of their strikers, Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani for this crucial Champions League tie at RB Leipzig as both had injuries following the 3-1 win at West Ham on Saturday. United needed just one point from six from their last two games, and took none.
Can’t really blame the Keeper today. But poor communication in the third crucial goal, between De Gea and Maguire allowed a cross to arrive unchallenged, and by the time the Spaniard reacted the ball was already moving past him. Poor organization across the defense throughout proved costly even in the other two goals.
My Man of the Match would be Paul Pogba who came on as a sub. He made an instant impact on United’s play. He forced a crucial second goal for United as he leapt imperiously to force in the second goal off Maguire. He played fantastic forward passes as the Reds pushed for the equalizer.
Solskjaer, confirmed that his team were not good enough on the night but were unlucky in the end not to level the game at 3-3 at the Red Bull Arena. He must now ready his side for a Manchester derby against City on Saturday.
