Man of the Match: Everton vs Man Utd (Carabao Cup)

It is surprising that United only ascertained their progress to the Carabao Cup Semi Final, with practically the last kick of the game. United could and should have been at least three up within the first 15 minutes but could only find the net through Cavani in the 88th minute. United in fact had 19 shots in all, to Everton’s 7.

My Man of the Match is Edinson Cavani . The Uruguayan seems to have grown into the side after arriving as a deadline day transfer. He is tenacious and feisty and shows good attacking movement. He came up with the goods when they really mattered, firing United into the cup’s semi-finals with just a couple of minutes on the clock with a brilliant strike. In truth he should have scored earlier than he did, and perhaps lucky not to be sent off after an incident with Yerry Mina.

For the second year in a row, United will now face Manchester City in the semi-finals of the competition. They were knocked out by Pep Guardiola’s side over two legs at the same stage last season, but on this occasion they will welcome their rivals to Old Trafford for a one-off tie in the first week of January.

Next up, United face Leicester City on Saturday. The latter are one point above United in the table. Paul Merson opines that the Reds will have to be taken seriously as Liverpool’s main Premier League title rivals if they emerge from their visit to Leicester with another away win.
