Harakiri United reach FA Cup final

Coventry 3

Man Utd 3 (pen.)

ETH and his merry men (they should be because luck smiled on them today) have reached the FA Cup final in a match which should have been won in an hour and should have been lost after 2 hours. Despite several attempts to by ETH and the players to commit Harakiri ( A Japanese Suicide ritual) we eventually survived and will be playing our noisy neighbours at Wembley just like last year.

Scott gave us the lead after a slow start, and when Harry made it 2-0 with a header (from a corner, please note!) we seemed in control. Early in the second half, Bruno made it 3-0 after his shot got deflected into the corner. Game, set, match United. Or maybe not!

Mark Robins threw caution to the wind and risked with his changes. ETHs reaction was to pull of Mainoo and Garnacho. Enter Harakiri mode! Antony should have replaced the inept Rashford but it seems that for this manager, Rashford must be on the pitch even if he combines practically nothing. Coventry got one back as our defence did not pick up a player all alone in the box. A deflected shot looped over the static Onana, and it was 3-2. Coventry believed, we tried to run the clock down and made Coventry look good, like we always do when we try to defend the lead, and AWB confirmed it was not his day when he committed a pen in injury time. Coventry scored the penalty and took it to extra time.

That last 30 minutes of normal time deserve a special chapter in the compendium on how to mismanage a comfortable lead and throw away a match already won!

Coventry were better in extra time despite Bruno’s shot hitting the bar. And they thought they were through to the final when more pathetic defending allowed Coventry to score on 120 minutes. VAR to the rescue. United fans joyous because we were going to the penalties…oh dear!

I only watched the first penalty by Casemiro and could not take it anymore. I just say in a dark room listening to the reaction of the gathering at our Supporter’s Club until there was a huge roar and the Glory Glory Man Utd went on in full blast.

Phew! I did not have any energy left to celebrate. Or maybe was not in the mood to! The team that deserved to go through, simply for not giving up at 3-0 down, had lost on penalties to a United side that stopped playing after 60 minutes, and let’s admit it, the manager made a mess with his substitutions.

ETH still has a chance of landing a trophy, albeit we face you know who. My gut feeling is that even if he does win it, it will not necessarily be enough to save him his job….Numquam Moribimur!
