Brentford 4
Man Utd 3
A 4-3 defeat at Brentford sounds like we were into it throughout and it was a marginal defeat. We were outplayed and losing 4-1 until a late flurry and 2 goals in the dying minutes to make the score respectable.
Amorim fielded the third-youngest starting XI in Premier League history as United, rightly so, prioritized their upcoming Europa League semi-final second leg against Athletic Bilbao, making eight changes from the previous match.
Mount gave us an early lead on the 14th minute, sliding home a cross from Garnacho but Brentford quickly turned the game around. An unfortunate own goal by Luke Shaw, deflecting a shot from Damsgaard, mad it 1-1. Shortly after, Schade headed in a far-post cross from Nørgaard to put Brentford ahead as United defender de Ligt was injured and play was not stopped. Having said that, it was another instant where our defenders were perfectly hapy to allow the crosses to come in and let the defenders in the box deal with situation!
In the second half, Brentford extended their lead with Schade scoring his second header and Wissa adding a close-range finish, making it 4-1 as United seemed to have remained in the dressing room! A late Garnacho stunner from outside the box and the returning Amad getting another in stoppage time through a deflected shot, time simply ran out.
This was United’s 16th loss of the EPL season, a club record in the Premier League era, and extended our winless run to six matches-our worst since 2015.
United struggled defensively and losing de Ligt early on was a blow – even for the remaining matches of this season. Despite the youthful United side showing some moments of decent football, we simply did not have enough hunger and skill to get anything out of this match.
Whatever happens in the Europa League, Amorim needs to start the next seasons with a few wins or the pressure will be on immediately…Numquam Moribimur!
